Angiosarcoma of the Proximal Phalanx of the Fifth Toe: A Case Report
Abstract:
Primary angiosarcoma of bone is an exceedingly rare and aggressive vascular tumor characterized by early metastasis and local recurrence. To the best of our knowledge, angiosarcoma arising in the phalanx of the toe has not been reported previously, although a few cases involving the phalanges of the fingers have been described. We report the case of an 80-year-old woman with primary angiosarcoma arising in the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe who presented with pain and swelling. Early radiological diagnosis was challenging because of the small size of the lesion within a diminutive bone. The patient underwent toe amputation. Five months later, imaging suggested possible metastasis to the gluteus muscle; however, considering the patient's advanced age, she was managed with clinical follow-up. This report highlights the imaging and pathological features of angiosarcoma arising in the phalanx, which may provide a useful reference for the recognition of small vascular tumors of bone.
