Abstract:
With the proliferation of AI-powered electronic devices, the development of environmentally friendly transparent screens capable of blocking blue light is crucial for eye protection. Herein, we fabricate a transparent wood screen (W-screen) by removing light-absorbing lignin, impregnating it with waterborne polyurethane, and nanocoating it with plant-derived lutein. Optical matching between polyurethane and aligned cellulose nanofibers enables the densified wood structure to achieve an 86% visible transmittance and 73 MPa tensile strength. The lutein nanocoating blocks 96% of blue light (400-500 nm), protecting the human macula. Leveraging the natural wood texture, we evaluated the eye-protection and psychological benefits of a W-screen integrated into mobile displays in real scenarios. Among 30 randomly selected volunteers, the comprehensive psychological indicators are 1.77 and 1.78 times higher than those of glass and unprotected screens, respectively. Eye tracking reveals reduced fatigue and improved subjective comfort. Combining mechanical robustness, blue light blocking, and visual comfort, this biomass-derived W-screen is promising for next-generation green electronics.
