Abstract:
Herein, we report a fluorescence/colorimetric dual-mode probe for NO2- detection based on blue-emissive carbonized polymer dots (b-CPDs), rapidly synthesized from m-phenylenediamine and phosphoric acid via a one-step solvent-free thermal route. The probe enabled rapid and sensitive detection of NO2- within 3 min, with fluorescence and colorimetric detection limits as low as 30 and 5 nM, respectively. This performance may arise from low background absorption due to limited conjugation and stable dispersion at relatively high concentrations enabled by abundant hydrophilic surface groups. Smartphone readout enabled a portable quantitative platform for on-site analysis. Real-sample recoveries were 98.20%-105.67%, with RSDs ≤ 4.79% and no significant difference from the results obtained by ion chromatography. Structural characterization and quantum chemical calculations suggested that the colorimetric response may originate from a diazotization-coupling reaction involving surface amino groups, whereas fluorescence quenching may arise from the combined contributions of the inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching.
