Objectives:
to analyze the work of nursing professionals in Rondônia between 1946 and 1976.
Methods:
a socio-historical, qualitative, and documentary study based on the analysis of articles published in the Alto Madeira newspaper. The documentary research followed three stages: pre-analysis, organization, and data analysis, with interpretation grounded in the socio-historical context of nursing in the state.
Results:
a progressive increase in professional engagement in nursing was observed, with emphasis on hiring processes, work settings, advertisements, and events. Female visibility was significant, with qualities such as experience and competence being highlighted. Professional activities included caregiving, medical support, teamwork, and health education.
Conclusion:
despite precarious working conditions and the absence of nursing training programs during the period, the work of these professionals was documented by the Alto Madeira newspaper, which served as an important historical source on the profession and the consolidation of nursing in Rondônia, especially after the establishment of the Regional Nursing Council in the Amazon region.
