Comparing Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Approaches for Quantifying Magnetic-Field-Induced Orientation of

Abstract:
The magnetic-field-induced orientation of superparamagnetic multicore iron oxide nanoparticles, exemplified by ferucarbotran (Resovist), was quantified by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Scattering patterns were recorded as a function of magnetic field strength and particle concentration and analyzed using the Maier-Saupe orientational distribution function, originally introduced for nematic liquid crystals. This analysis yielded the second-order orientational order parameter, which was compared with values obtained from a circular-function approach and a model-free evaluation. The close agreement between the different procedures demonstrates that SAXS provides a reliable basis for quantifying field-induced orientational order in dispersions of multicore iron oxide nanoparticles. Beyond its relevance for colloid and nanomaterials research, this method comparison may also be useful for biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, for which reproducible characterization and standardized analysis protocols are essential. In the longer term, automated SAXS workflows, potentially supported by artificial-intelligence-assisted data evaluation, could further improve the speed, robustness, and comparability of orientation analyses in anisotropic nanostructures and colloidal systems.

Diamagnetism
Diamagnetism was discovered by Anton Brugmans in 1778 when he observed that bismuth gets repelled by magnetic fields, thus theorizing that diamagnets get repelled by magnets.
Magnetic Susceptibility and Permeability
When diamagnetic materials are placed under an external magnetic field, the moments opposite to the field are induced. Hence, the susceptibility for diamagnets has a minimal negative value of 10-5–10-6. Since...
