Abstract:
Allergic reactions associated with arthropod bites are a growing concern worldwide. In particular, Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) is a red meat allergy associated with IgE antibodies against galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-Gal) that is typically linked to tick bites, but other arthropods with alpha-Gal content may also induce allergic reactions. The AGS is underdiagnosed and thus important to evaluate the risks that may be associated with exposure to bites of arthropods with alpha-Gal. To approach this objective, herein are described the materials and methods for the detection of alpha-Gal content and expression of galactosyltransferases in arthropods.
