Abstract:
Abnormalities of platelet number and function are among the most common, and at times most vexing, consultations posed to the clinical hematologist. This article surveys the contemporary diagnostic approach to platelet disorders, progressing from the clinical history, examination, and first-line laboratory assessment, through the specialized phenotypic and functional assays used to characterize platelet reactivity, and finally to the molecular testing and emerging methods that are advancing in the field.
