Application for the extension of use of the food additive glycolipids (E 246)
Abstract:
The EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Flavourings (FAF Panel) provides a scientific opinion on the safety evaluation of a proposed extension of use of the food additive glycolipids (E 246) with respect to several food categories in addition to the uses already permitted in accordance with Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. The application for the initial authorisation of the food additive glycolipids was evaluated by the Panel in 2021 when an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 10 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day applicable to glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia was established. In the present opinion, the Panel calculated an updated dietary exposure estimate of glycolipids (E 246) resulting from the proposed extension of use submitted by an applicant. The ADI of 10 mg/kg bw per day was not exceeded in any of the age groups of the general population. The same conclusions apply to the dietary exposure estimates for consumers of food supplements. The Panel concluded that the proposed extension of use of glycolipids (E 246) in several food categories is not of safety concern.
