Abstract:
Background and objective Various support system interventions have demonstrated efficacy in enhancing self-care management among patients with heart failure (HF) through a comprehensive understanding derived from diverse perspectives involving patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers (HCPs) in self-care practices. The objective of this study was to explore the self-care management needs of patients with HF and how caregivers and HCPs support these needs. Methods A qualitative approach was used to examine patients' experiences with HF. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 24 patients from a Saudi tertiary center between May 2024 and May 2025. Data collection involved semi-structured, face-to-face interviews about their understanding, practices, and challenges. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed thematically. Results The findings highlight the importance of support systems as a foundation for self-care management among patients with HF. Participants with HF reported that their spouses were their primary caregivers. Most were satisfied with the care and communication provided by HCPs. Many did not exercise because of their condition. Most reported that HF-related costs were covered by the government, with some receiving financial aid. Others relied on family and relatives for support. Conclusions Support systems serve as a vital foundation for self-care management among patients with HF. Family caregivers, HCPs, and institutional resources all play crucial roles in ensuring comprehensive self-care management for patients with HF. Social media, newspapers, education initiatives, and free health screenings serve a significant role in raising public awareness and understanding of risk factors that predict HF.
