Abstract:
Burnout among youth-serving professionals represents a growing concern for both workforce stability and public health, particularly in rural and underserved communities where professionals may face high emotional demands, trauma-exposed service environments, and limited organizational resources. This study examined associations among perceived organizational support, leadership, emotional work demands, work-family conflict, burnout, and job satisfaction among rural youth-serving professionals. A cross-sectional quantitative survey included 128 professionals working in juvenile justice, public health, probation, social service, administrative, and community-based youth-serving systems in rural regions of New York State. Recruitment was coordinated through Clinton County-based professional and organizational networks. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, reliability analyses, and multiple regression analyses were used to examine associations among study variables. Higher perceived organizational support and more positive leadership ratings were associated with lower burnout and greater job satisfaction, whereas emotional work demands and work-family conflict were associated with higher burnout and lower job satisfaction. The multivariable models accounted for 51% of the variance in burnout and 46% of the variance in job satisfaction. These findings highlight organizational and psychosocial workplace conditions that may be relevant to workforce well-being and retention in rural youth-serving systems.
