Enhancing CT anatomy learning in radiotherapy education using Eclipse treatment planning system and IMAIOS e-anatomy:
Introduction:
Accurate interpretation of cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) anatomy is fundamental to therapeutic radiography practice, underpinning radiotherapy planning and verification. Emerging evidence suggests that three-dimensional educational technologies may enhance anatomy learning compared with traditional teaching approaches. This pilot study evaluated the impact of using the Varian Eclipse treatment planning system (TPS) as an anatomy learning tool alongside IMAIOS e-Anatomy within radiotherapy education.
Methods:
A quasi-experimental single-group pre-test/post-test study was conducted with first-year students (n = 18) within a university Radiotherapy and Oncology programme. Anatomy teaching using Eclipse TPS and IMAIOS e-Anatomy supplemented the existing curriculum. CT anatomy knowledge was assessed at baseline (T1), five weeks post-intervention (T2), and three months post-intervention (T3) using a 40-item questionnaire. Student perceptions of IMAIOS e-Anatomy were also evaluated using a modified Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire.
Results:
Sixteen students completed all knowledge assessments. Mean knowledge scores increased from 37.03 (SD = 7.32) at T1 to 60.78 (SD = 12.99) at T2 and remained elevated at T3 (58.44, SD = 12.31). Knowledge scores improved significantly over time (F(2,30) = 52.70, p < .001, partial η2 = 0.778), with significant improvements between T1 and T2 and between T1 and T3 (both p < .001), while the difference between T2 and T3 was not significant (p = .42). Students reported perceived usefulness, confidence, engagement, and intention to continue using IMAIOS e-Anatomy.
Conclusion:
The integration of Eclipse TPS and IMAIOS e-Anatomy was associated with improved CT anatomy knowledge, with gains maintained at three-month follow-up. Students reported high levels of engagement and perceived preparedness for clinical practice. Combining Eclipse TPS and IMAIOS e-Anatomy may support clinically relevant anatomy education in therapeutic radiography.
Implications For Practice:
Radiotherapy software and interactive anatomy tools may support learner confidence and preparation for radiotherapy practice, although further evaluation in larger studies is required.
