Abstract:
Osteoporosis is characterized not only by reduced bone mass but also by impaired structure and function of the bone matrix and bone collagen. Although conventional bone mineral density assessment can reflect the level of bone mineralization, it cannot fully capture bone quality and the biomechanical performance of bone tissue. Bone collagen plays a critical role in maintaining bone tissue toughness, energy-absorbing capacity and the stability of bone microarchitecture. Its abnormal cross-linking, degradation and defective repair are closely associated with increased bone fragility. This article focuses on the roles and values of bone collagen in osteoporosis, elaborates on bone collagen-related pathological changes, influencing factors, and its mechanisms in osteoporotic fractures, and introduces the latest diagnostic and therapeutic technologies as well as future development directions. It highlights the great value of establishing a "mineralized-collagen two-dimensional" bone-quality evaluation system that takes both bone mineralization and bone collagen status into account, providing new insights for the precise diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures.

Fractures: Bone Repair
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...
Bone Disorders
Bone deposition is also affected by the levels of sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone that promote osteoblast activity and bone matrix synthesis. When the level of these hormones decreases due to aging, it causes a reduction in bone deposition. As a result, bone resorption by osteoclasts...

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is involved in the process of bone remodeling. Retinoic acid, the active metabolite of Vitamin A, has nuclear receptors in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are involved in bone remodeling.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 acts as a cofactor during the formation of osteoblast-related proteins, such as osteocalcin. Vitamin B12 plays a role...
