Using Generative Art to Convey Past and Future Climate Transitions

Abstract:
This cover essay takes the graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower as its point of departure. As in earlier contributions to the series, the cover image is treated not as an illustration but as an argument, one that opens onto a broader history. Rather than focusing on the image's production or iconography alone, the essay situates it within an overlooked visual tradition of critical Black futurity that emerged during the Space Race. Read alongside Civil Rights protest photography, editorial cartoons, and Black vernacular culture, Butler's imagined future challenges the enduring equation of technological advancement with social progress. The essay argues that this visual genealogy reframes the meaning of the Space Age itself, revealing how Black artists and activists redirected attention from the spectacle of outer space to social conditions on Earth. In doing so, it offers a different way of seeing both the cover image and the future it imagines.
