AntLink: A Biomimicry-Orientated System for Workflow Improvement at an Automobile Aftersales Service Centre

The South African automotive industry is under increasing pressure to improve the operational efficiency and sustainability of its aftersales services. Biomimicry was applied to enhance maintenance, repair and waste management processes at a medium-sized Western Cape dealership. Although overall customer satisfaction scores were high, significant gaps were identified between customer treatment ratings and satisfaction with repair quality, indicating inefficiencies in service delivery. Repeat customer complaints persisted due to diagnostic errors, inconsistent repair quality, and lack of innovative sustainable waste practices. The Biomimicry Challenge to Biology methodology guided the research. Root cause analysis tools (Business Process Mapping, Why-Why trees, and Fishbone Diagrams) identified seven functional requirements, mapped to the Biomimicry Taxonomy to derive nature-inspired design principles. Three biomimicry concepts were generated and evaluated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process; the highest-ranking concept, Decentralised Resource Distribution Inspired by Ant Colonies, was emulated into AntLink, a digital system that replaces rigid hierarchy with a collaborative, real-time "digital pheromone trail" linking managers, service advisors and technicians. Verification confirmed that AntLink satisfied all functional requirements, including first-time repair resolution targets, standardised diagnostic checklists for recurring processes, and waste category monitoring. Validation combined stakeholder surveys across operational roles, showing overall positive consensus with good agreement on functional requirement alignment, and an assessment against Biomimicry 3.8's Life's Principles confirmed conceptual alignment with resilience, adaptability and sustainability. AntLink illustrates a practical route for translating nature-inspired design into measurable operational and environmental gains in the automotive aftersales sector.
