Abstract:
Access to safe water at pastoral watering points constrains livestock productivity across Kazakhstan's extensive pasturelands, many of which remain underused because of inadequate water infrastructure. This review presents a decision framework for selecting off-grid groundwater treatment trains-membrane filtration, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, and ozonation-according to source-water salinity, treatment capacity, operational constraints, and budget. Evidence from Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa indicates that photovoltaic (PV)-powered brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) combined with low-pressure UV disinfection is a strong baseline option when desalination and terminal microbial control are both required. Reported performance and cost ranges vary substantially with feed-water quality, scale, recovery, solar resource, storage strategy, and local logistics; they should therefore be treated as design inputs rather than universal values. Priority research needs include membrane fouling under continental climate extremes, bromate formation in local groundwaters, long-term solar-BWRO field performance, and the fate of antimicrobial resistance genes. The framework is intended to support site-specific technology selection rather than prescribe a single treatment train for all pastoral settings.
