Abstract:
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is a common and debilitating complication of diabetes, affecting up to 50% of patients. Early identification and management of DPN are crucial to minimize complications and maintain patient quality of life. Multiple guidelines have been developed to provide evidence-based recommendations for DPN screening, diagnosis, and management. However, implementation of these guidelines in clinical practice remains a challenge. Therefore, a task force was assembled by the American Limb Preservation Society (ALPS) to summarize the recent literature in this area. This article outlines the key recommendations of DPN guidelines and discusses their implementation in a local context. The authors provide suggestions for real-world implementation in practice, focusing on documentation, stakeholder engagement, practice support, care pathways, and continuity of care. By adopting a systematic approach to DPN guideline implementation, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden of this progressive and disabling condition.
