Background:
Violence is a multidimensional phenomenon that affects individuals and communities across personal, relational, and social contexts. Nursing students are not exempt from these experiences, as they may encounter interpersonal violence both in academic and clinical settings. Educational strategies that foster reflection, empathy, and social awareness are important for supporting nursing students' development both as individuals and as future healthcare professionals.
Objective:
This study aimed to explore nursing students' perceptions of violence and its prevention through the Photovoice method, using Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory as an analytical framework.
Methods:
A participatory action research design was employed. Thirty-five senior nursing students participated during the 2025-2026 academic year. Each student captured two photographs-one depicting violence and one symbolizing its prevention-and wrote reflective narratives based on the SHOWED technique. Data were analyzed using a two-stage hybrid approach.
Results:
Two overarching categories were identified: (1) representations of violence-destruction, neglect, and social indifference-and (2) prevention-resilience, awareness, and collective restoration. Across ecological levels, violence emerged as internal decay (microsystem), relational disconnection (mesosystem), structural inequality (exosystem), and cultural desensitization (macrosystem). Furthermore, prevention themes reflected individual resilience, interpersonal support, and societal healing.
Conclusion:
Photovoice provided nursing students with a structured visual-reflective approach to representing violence and its prevention across personal, relational, institutional, and societal contexts. Integrating Photovoice into violence-related nursing education may complement theoretical and skills-based teaching by facilitating discussion of the relational, cultural, and structural dimensions of violence and prevention.
