Abstract:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex genetic disorder characterized by polygenic susceptibility with substantial environmental modulation. While many candidate gene studies and large genome-wide association studies have identified loci associated with IBS susceptibility, the role of genetic testing for IBS in clinical practice is uncertain. Instead, emergent areas such as pharmacogenetics and nutrigenetics may offer more immediate clinical applications by guiding medication or dietary interventions.
