Abstract:
Supported Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and Pt single atoms (SAs) are widely employed in the selective hydrogenation of various fine chemicals, where Pt NPs typically deliver high activity while Pt SAs afford exceptional selectivity. Integrating these advantages into a unified catalytic system to reconcile the trade-off between activity and selectivity in alkynes hydrogenation remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a novel Pt/TiO2-200C2H2 catalyst featuring both Pt NPs and Pt SAs active sites was prepared via a simple and mild C2H2 pretreatment. The C2H2 monomer undergoes polymerization to form trans-polyacetylene (PA), which in situ covers the surface of Pt NPs and Pt SAs. The PA coating on the Pt/TiO2-200C2H2 surface donates electrons to Pt sites, promoting H2 dissociation and activation, inhibiting sintering and aggregation of the Pt species, thereby significantly enhancing the catalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogenation of various alkynes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations prove that the PA coating increases the hydrogenation barrier of styrene on both Pt NPs and Pt SAs, suppressing over-hydrogenation and enhancing selectivity. This work not only offers a novel approach for fabrication of Pt-based dual active site catalysts but also presents a scalable polymer coating for modulating the catalytic performance of alkynes hydrogenation catalysts.

Reduction of Alkynes to cis-Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Like alkenes, alkynes can be reduced to alkanes in the presence of transition metal catalysts such as Pt, Pd, or Ni. The reaction involves two sequential syn additions of hydrogen via a cis-alkene intermediate.
Reduction of Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Metals like palladium, platinum, and nickel are commonly used in their solid forms — fine powder on an inert surface. As these catalysts remain insoluble in the reaction mixture, they are referred to as heterogeneous catalysts.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...

Preparation of Alkynes: Alkylation Reaction
Alkylation of terminal alkynes with primary alkyl halides in the presence of a strong base like sodium amide is one of the common methods for the synthesis of longer carbon-chain alkynes. For example, treatment of 1-propyne with sodium amide followed by reaction with ethyl bromide yields 2-pentyne.
Radical Substitution: Hydrogenolysis of Alkyl Halides with Tributyltin Hydride
The bonds formed in this reaction are stronger than the bonds broken, making it energetically favorable. The reaction follows a radical chain mechanism similar to radical halogenation reactions,...
