Abstract:
High tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) density predicts favorable outcomes in several solid tumors but worse outcomes in bladder cancer, and the basis for this discrepancy is unclear. In this issue, Péricart and colleagues leverage en bloc resection of non-muscle-invasive bladder tumors to show that TLS accumulate without acquiring the features of productive antitumor immunity. The work reframes TLS in this setting as structures for which functional state, not abundance, dictates their contribution to tumor control. See related article by Péricart et al., p. XX.

Lymphoid Cells and Tissues
Lymphoid cells consist of various types of immune system cells. These include B and T lymphocytes, which are responsible for producing antibodies and killing infected cells, respectively. Dendritic cells act as messengers between the innate and adaptive...
Secondary Lymphoid Organs
The spleen is a vital organ in the lymphatic system, nestled in the upper left side of the abdomen. It is composed of two primary regions: the red pulp and the white pulp, each having distinct functions. The red pulp performs a significant role in blood filtration. It efficiently purges the blood of old or damaged red blood cells and...
Urinary Bladder
In males, the bladder is situated in front of the rectum, while in females, it is positioned anterior to the vagina and uterus. The bladder floor contains an inverted triangular area called the trigone, defined by the two ureteric...
