Abstract:
Purpose: To evaluate utilization trends of Hall stainless steel crowns (SSCs) compared with conventional SSCs in a US dental school over a 12-year period. Methods: Following institutional approval, a retrospective chart review was conducted using an electronic health record with a unique procedure code for Hall crowns. Records from January 1, 2012, through December 31, 2024, were analyzed for pediatric patients receiving SSCs. Results: A total of 25,837 SSCs were placed, including 3,526 (13.6%) using the Hall technique. The proportion of Hall crowns increased significantly over time (P<0.001). Pediatric dentistry residents placed the greatest number of Hall crowns, with increasing adoption by predoctoral dental students over time. Hall crowns were most frequently placed in 5-year-old children and on primary mandibular first molars. Conclusions: Use of the Hall technique increased substantially over time, supporting its integration into pediatric dental education and clinical practice.
