Abstract:
The pair density wave state with eight-unit-cell (8a_{0}) periodicity has been widely regarded as the primary order in cuprates, yet its existence and origin remain subjects of intense debate. Using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we observe spatial modulations of the electronic states with approximately 8a_{0} periodicity in both the superconducting and insulating regimes of hole-doped Ca_{2}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} cuprate. We find that the 8a_{0} spatial patterns are generated by the formation of molecular orbitals by doped holes, which organize into 4a_{0}×4a_{0} plaquettes as the basic unit. Our results identify the 4a_{0} molecular-orbital plaquette as the fundamental electronic building block in cuprates, while the 8a_{0} pair density wave represents a spatial subharmonic that emerges at sufficiently high doping.

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...
