Purpose:
This study aimed to evaluate the management of patients with odontogenic maxillary sinusitis associated with foreign bodies.
Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed 165 patients treated at our institution; 48 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. All presented odontogenic sinusitis with a maxillary sinus foreign body and underwent surgery according to a multidisciplinary treatment algorithm based on clinical and radiological findings.
Results:
Thirty-two patients were treated with a simultaneous combined oral and nasal approach, 12 with an oral approach alone, and 4 with a nasal approach alone. Complete removal of the foreign body and complete symptom resolution were achieved in all cases.
Conclusion:
In this retrospective series, surgical treatment was successful in all 48 patients. Our results support that a multidisciplinary approach was the most frequently utilized strategy in our cohort and proved highly effective in appropriately selected patients for the management of odontogenic sinusitis associated with maxillary foreign bodies, allowing surgeons to tailor the surgical approach to the specific anatomical and clinical presentation.
