Abstract:
The Swedish system for pharmaceutical recommendations is based on multiple actors with clearly complementary roles (authorities, regions, and expert bodies). Four national agencies contribute different perspectives: clinical (the Swedish Medical Products Agency), system/policy (the National Board of Health and Welfare), population (the Public Health Agency of Sweden), and evidence (the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services), while TLV (the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency) is responsible for health economics. Practical prioritisation in clinical practice is mainly carried out by drug and therapeutics committees (for prescription medicines) and the NT Council (for hospital-administered medicines). Overall, the system aims to achieve evidence-based, equitable, and cost-effective use of medicines.
