Purpose:
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a well-established cause of vision loss in older adults. However, the prevalence and distribution of documented systemic comorbidities in younger adults are not well characterized.
Methods:
This retrospective cohort study utilized the TriNetX US Collaborative Network to identify younger adults (aged 18-50 years) with retinal vein occlusion (RVO), including both branch (BRVO) and central (CRVO) subtypes. The prevalence of predefined systemic comorbidities was evaluated during the period preceding and within 90 days following the diagnosis of RVO to characterize their frequency and distribution among young patients.
Results:
A total of 5,257 younger adults with RVO were included. Before RVO diagnosis, 66.4% of patients had at least one documented risk factor, most commonly hypertension (25%), obesity (17.4%), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (13.3%). Primary thrombophilia (2.2%) and hematologic malignancy (1.6%) were less frequently documented. Within 90 days following RVO diagnosis, 12.3% of patients received at least one newly coded risk-factor diagnosis, most commonly hypertension (4.5%), obesity (2.3%), and hyperlipidemia (1.9%). Among patients without any previously documented risk factors, 3.7% had at least one risk factor newly documented during this period.
Conclusions:
Among young adults with RVO, common vascular comorbidities were documented more frequently than hypercoagulable or vasculitic conditions.
