    Summary

    Elderly individuals have lower vitamin D levels and binding capacities. Reduced vitamin D binding capacity does not explain the low vitamin D concentrations observed in older adults.

    Background:

    • Low plasma 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations are common in elderly populations.
    • Vitamin D status is influenced by both intake and the body's capacity to bind and transport vitamin D.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate plasma 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations and binding capacities in elderly patients compared to young controls.
    • To determine if reduced 25-OHD binding capacity contributes to lower 25-OHD concentrations in the elderly.
