Abstract:
The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation is a fundamental transformation for converting ketones into esters, yet achieving high regioselectivity among structurally similar alkyl groups remains a longstanding challenge. Herein, we report a β-boron-directed strategy to control migratory selectivity in Baeyer-Villiger oxidations of alkyl ketones. This approach exploits the β-boron effect, wherein hyperconjugative interaction between the σ(C-B) bond and the adjacent σ*(C-C) orbital weakens the C-C bond and enhances its migratory aptitude. As a result, β-boryl ketones undergo highly regioselective rearrangement, overriding the classical migratory order. A broad range of β-MIDA boronate substrates are compatible with this protocol, enabling the efficient synthesis of diverse 1,2-amphiphilic building blocks. Mechanistic studies support the critical role of the β-boron effect in the migration step. Furthermore, preliminary results demonstrate that this effect can be extended to the Beckmann rearrangement, revealing boron as a versatile and previously underexplored directing group for controlling regioselectivity in rearrangement reactions.

Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Hydroboration
Hydroboration proceeds in a concerted fashion with the attack of borane on the π bond, giving a cyclic four-centered transition state. The –BH2 group is bonded to the less substituted carbon and –H to the more substituted carbon. The concerted nature requires the simultaneous addition of –H and –BH2 across the same face of the alkene giving syn stereochemistry.

Preparation of Alcohols via Addition Reactions
The acid-catalyzed addition of water to the double bond of alkenes is a large-scale industrial method used to synthesize low-molecular-weight alcohols. An acidic atmosphere is required to allow the hydrogen in the water molecule to act as an electrophile and attack the double bond in an alkene. The addition of a proton to the double bond creates a carbocation intermediate. The proton preferentially bonds to the less substituted end of the double bond to create a more stable carbocation...

The hydrohalogenation of an unsymmetrical alkene can yield two haloalkane products, depending on which vinylic carbon takes up the halogen. However, one product usually predominates, where hydrogen adds to the vinylic carbon bearing the...
