Introduction And Aim:
The development and exacerbation of fatigue in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have not been widely studied. Our aim was to evaluate the association of sarcopenia, anthropometric parameters, and body composition with fatigue, in patients with IBD.
Methods:
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Fatigue questionnaire was applied to assess fatigue. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated, and body composition was evaluated through Biodynamics® tetrapolar bioimpedance.
Results:
In 106 patients with IBD, the prevalence of fatigue was 83%, regardless of disease activity (p > 0.05). Patients who were employed (86.4% vs 61.1%, p = 0.011), presented with ulcerative colitis (UC) (58% vs 22.2%, p = 0.006), or with Crohn's disease (CD) diagnosed between 17 and 40 years of age (73% vs 42.9%, p = 0.045), had a greater prevalence of fatigue. There was no statistically significant association between fatigue and sarcopenia or fatigue and body composition (p > 0.05). The regression analysis indicated no risk of fatigue for low weight, overweight, lean mass, or phase angle, or for sarcopenia criteria, hand grip strength, or gait speed (p > 0.05).
Conclusions:
The prevalence of fatigue was high in patients with IBD, predominantly in adults, even in the disease remission phase, especially in patients with UC and CD (the latter diagnosed between 17 and 40 years of age). Body composition was not associated with fatigue.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
