Abstract:
Background: Effective face-to-face treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exist, but most young people with PTSD are not offered evidence-based treatment. Internet-delivered cognitive therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder in young people (iCT-PTSD-YP) may increase access to effective treatment. Objective: This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of young people receiving iCT-PTSD-YP.Method: Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 20 young people, aged 12-17 years, who had participated in an early-stage randomized controlled trial (RCT). Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify key themes and subthemes. Results: Three overarching themes were identified: 'Accessibility', 'Engagement', and 'Expectations and outcomes'. The therapist-supported digital therapy was perceived as accessible, available, and easy to use and navigate. iCT-PTSD-YP was found to be convenient and flexible, and taking part in an RCT offered the opportunity to access thorough assessment and treatment. The level of engagement depended on individual and contextual factors, and was helped by the support of a therapist, a well-designed digital platform with engaging therapeutic content, and receiving treatment in a safe and comfortable environment. iCT-PTSD-YP was perceived as efficacious by the majority of young people, but requiring a level of hard work, motivation, and commitment. Conclusions: The findings highlight the potential utility of a therapist-supported digital intervention for PTSD in young people. Factors that may impact engagement and outcomes should be incorporated in future changes to design and delivery to improve acceptability and accessibility.
