Abstract:
Sleep disorders are among the most common complaints in medical practice. Regardless of their field of expertise and level of care, patients report non-restorative sleep, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, daytime fatigue or concentration problems. Nevertheless, sleep problems are often only casually recorded in everyday clinical practice or interpreted as a concomitant symptom of other diseases. Sleep is not a non-specific characteristic of well-being, but an actively regulated biological functional state with high clinical significance.Sleep influences central bodily functions such as cardiovascular regulation, metabolism, immune response and neural processing. Changes in these systems almost always affect sleep. Conversely, persistent sleep disorders can contribute to the manifestation or progression of chronic diseases. This results in a paradigm shift in medical practice: sleep should not only be addressed when symptoms are pronounced but should be understood as a regular component of the medical history.
