Abstract:
Four new heteroleptic terbium(III) complexes of general composition [Tb(tfpd)3N] were synthesized via a facile one pot approach using 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (tfpd) as the β-diketonate ligand and substituted 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives as ancillary co-ligands. Elemental (CHN) analysis, along with FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, confirmed the formation of stable eight-coordinate Tb3+ complexes involving O, O- and N, N- donor coordination. The compounds exhibit wide optical band gaps, indicating semiconducting behavior and show good thermal stability, as evidenced by thermogravimetric analysis. Photoluminescence studies reveal Tb3+-centered green emission governed by the 5D4 → 7F5 transition at 547 nm. CIE chromaticity coordinates confirm bright green emission for complexes E1-E3, whereas E4 shows a slight blue shift due to ligand centered contributions. The results show that varying ancillary ligands effectively tunes the structural and photophysical properties of Tb(III) complexes, highlighting their potential for optoelectronic and display applications.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.

Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...
