Updates on the JUPITER (Justifying Patellar Instability Treatment by Results) Study

The JUPITER (Justifying Patellar Instability Treatment by Results) study is a large, prospective, multicenter cohort study designed to improve evidence-based decision-making in the treatment of patellofemoral instability. This article provides an update on the study, including its rationale, methodology, and key findings to date. Data from the JUPITER cohort demonstrate that isolated medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction can result in meaningful and durable improvements in patient-reported outcomes across a broad range of patients, while also highlighting the poor reliability of many commonly used radiographic and MRI-based anatomic measurements. Additional JUPITER studies have explored variability in surgical technique, the relationship between recurrent instability and cartilage damage, and the use of advanced imaging and machine-learning approaches for risk stratification. As the follow-up of the JUPITER Study continues, it remains well-positioned to further refine treatment guidelines and inform future standards of care for patellofemoral instability.
