Abstract:
This chapter addresses the biological and pharmacological behaviour of stable anionic boron clusters [B10H10]2-, [B12H12]2-, [CB11H12]-, [C2B9H12]-, and [M(C2B9H11)2]-. Specifically, we examine how their intrinsic physicochemical properties govern solubility and aggregation in aqueous media, interactions with biomacromolecules, cellular uptake, subcellular localisation, and toxicity and biological activity profiles. We provide a mechanistic framework that links the inorganic chemistry of anionic boron clusters to their behaviour in complex biological environments and clarifies their role as emerging inorganic pharmacophores at the chemistry-biology interface.

Metal-Ligand Bonds
In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...

Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly, SCN− can be...
