Abstract:
This work presents computational experiments rationalizing structure-property correlations encountered in the rich experimental data on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of β-phosphorylated nitroxide radicals, looking particularly at the hyperfine coupling parameters (HFC), proportional to the spin density at N and P nuclei. The models are based on the complementary use of density functional theory (DFT) and valence bond (VB) calculations. Taking a sufficiently large space of resonance structures, the VB account of HFCs becomes quantitatively comparable with the unrestricted DFT results, in a range compatible with experiment. At nitrogen, the HFC includes spin-polarization effects and a part tuned by the s:p content of the spin carrier, determined by the local molecular geometry embedding the NO group. The analysis performed on models of the title compounds showed that the spin density arrives on the phosphorus nucleus, in traces, by through-space distant interactions with the nitrogen spin carrier. The geometry dependence of the HFC parameters was charted on models relevant for a large class of instrumentally characterized molecules.

While fluorine-19 and phosphorous-31 have high natural abundances (100%) and positive gyromagnetic ratios, nitrogen-15 has a low natural abundance and a negative gyromagnetic ratio. However, nitrogen-15 is still preferred over nitrogen-14 (which has a high...

A consequence of chirality is the need for enantiomeric resolution. While this is theoretically possible for all...
Spin–Spin Coupling: Three-Bond Coupling (Vicinal Coupling)
The extent of coupling depends on the C‑C bond length, the two H‑C‑C angles, any electron-withdrawing substituents, and the dihedral angle between the involved orbitals. The...

¹H NMR: Complex Splitting
Splitting diagrams or splitting tree diagrams are routinely used to depict such complex couplings. While drawing splitting diagrams, the splitting with the larger coupling constant is usually applied first.
¹H NMR: Long-Range Coupling
In alkenes, spin information is communicated via σ–π overlap, as seen in allylic (four-bond) and homoallylic (five-bond) couplings. These coupling interactions are stronger when the σ bond is parallel to the alkene π orbitals.
