Background:
Ureteric stents are a commonly used treatment for ureteric obstruction; however, they are associated with significant morbidity that can be difficult to manage.
Objective:
This paper aims to present a clear, evidence-based framework for the assessment and management of ureteric stent-related symptoms in the primary care setting.
Discussion:
A detailed history, examination and appropriate investigations are important as a first step in evaluating ureteric stent- related symptoms. This approach helps to identify higher-acuity conditions with similar presentations that require referral to a hospital/emergency department. Once symptoms are confirmed as secondary to ureteric stent- related irritation, management of these symptoms can be commenced following a stepwise approach.
