Abstract:
The eating and feeding disorders are serious psychiatric disorders at the mind-body interface, often with an exceptionally high burden for affected individuals, their families and supporters, and wider society. In anorexia nervosa, high acute medical risk and patients' ambivalence about treatment can make a challenging combination that can impede engagement. First-line treatments for eating disorders are mainly psychological, with medications playing an adjunctive role. Novel biological and technology-based interventions are only slowly emerging. Compared with other psychiatric disorders, research into these disorders is seriously underfunded. Many uncertainties regarding their aetiology, maintenance, and treatment remain. Controversies mainly concern the treatment and care of those with the most severe and longstanding forms of illness. Advances in knowledge are most likely to arise from longitudinal studies combining multimodal assessments, using big data to develop better mechanistic understanding, and greater use of flexible trial designs to allow development of more personalised and precise interventions.
