A rare case of extradural gouty tophus in a teenage girl

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Gout, a common inflammatory arthritis, typically affects joints in the lower extremities.
    • Extradural spinal involvement is an exceptionally rare manifestation of gout.
    • Differential diagnosis of spinal canal lesions is crucial for appropriate management.

    Observation:

    • A teenage girl presented with symptoms suggestive of spinal canal compromise.
    • Imaging revealed an extradural lesion in the lumbar region.
    • Biopsy confirmed the presence of a gouty tophus.

    Findings:

    • This case highlights an unusual presentation of gout in an adolescent female.
    • The extradural gouty tophus mimicked other erosive spinal lesions.
    • Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • This case expands the differential diagnosis for spinal canal erosions, particularly in younger patients.
    • Consideration of gouty tophi in the differential diagnosis of spinal lesions is warranted.
    • Early recognition and diagnosis are essential for effective treatment and prevention of neurological deficits.
