J E Scott, W S Taor

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British Volume
    |May 1, 1979
    PubMed
    Summary

A new congenital knee abnormality characterized by absent or small patellae was identified in a family. Seven individuals also exhibited pelvic and upper femur deformities, distinguishing it from nail-patella syndrome.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Medical Genetics
    • Developmental Biology

    Background:

    • Patellar abnormalities can be associated with various genetic syndromes.
    • The nail-patella syndrome is a known condition with characteristic patellar and nail defects.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a novel congenital knee disorder observed in a familial cohort.
    • To differentiate this new syndrome from existing related conditions like nail-patella syndrome.

    Main Methods:

    • Clinical examination of affected family members.
    • Detailed assessment of skeletal abnormalities, focusing on the knee and pelvic girdle.

    Main Results:

    • Twelve family members presented with hypoplastic or absent patellae.
    • Seven patients also displayed abnormalities of the pelvic girdle and proximal femora.
    • Key differences in associated anomalies were noted compared to the nail-patella syndrome.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest a distinct genetic syndrome of congenital knee abnormality.
    • This condition represents a new variety of developmental anomaly affecting the knee joint and associated skeletal structures.
