    Summary

The right posterolateral tracheal band is a key indicator for right superior mediastinum pathology. Its thickness on computed tomograms can reveal abnormalities caused by various adjacent structures.

    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic imaging
    • Radiology
    • Mediastinal anatomy

    Background:

    • The right posterolateral tracheal band and right retrotracheal recess are important anatomical landmarks.
    • Evaluating pathology in the right superior mediastinum often relies on these structures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish normal measurement parameters for the right posterolateral tracheal band.
    • To assess the reliability of the posterolateral tracheal band in identifying mediastinal pathology.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurements of the posterolateral tracheal band were taken from computed tomograms of 100 normal patients.
    • Measurements were performed at two levels: the sternal notch and 2 cm below the sternal notch.

    Main Results:

    • The average thickness of the posterolateral tracheal band at the sternal notch was 8.4 +/- 3.8 mm.
    • The average thickness at 2 cm below the sternal notch was 6.4 +/- 1.8 mm.
    • Abnormal contours and widening of the band were observed with pathology in adjacent structures.

    Conclusions:

    • The right posterolateral tracheal band measurements provide reliable baseline data for normal anatomy.
    • Changes in the posterolateral tracheal band are significant indicators of right superior mediastinal pathology.
