    Background:

    • A novel polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine, Pneumovax, became available in February 1978.
    • High-risk populations, including those with sickle cell disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, and the elderly, are primary targets for pneumococcal vaccination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the early dissemination and implementation of the new polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine.
    • To evaluate the vaccination rates among high-risk patient groups in various clinical settings.

    • Prospective follow-up of a single clinic population.
    • Telephone survey of multiple healthcare centers including neighborhood health centers, private practices, and a university hematology clinic.
