    Summary

    This study assessed risks for open and closed cardiac procedures in infants with congenital heart disease. Results show similar mortality rates (6-7%) for both procedures, suggesting improved techniques allow earlier repair.

    Background:

    • Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects many infants.
    • Surgical interventions for CHD carry inherent risks, especially in young children.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the risks and outcomes of open and closed cardiac procedures for CHD in patients under two years of age.
    • To determine the current mortality rates for these interventions.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of cardiac catheterizations and operations in patients under two years old.
    • Data collected from January 1974 to December 1977 at The Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center.

    Main Results:

    • 370 patients under two years underwent cardiac catheterization.

  • Overall hospital mortality for both open and closed procedures was between 6% and 7%.

    • Improved intraoperative and postoperative techniques may enable earlier repair of simpler congenital heart defects.
