    Summary

    This study compared the pathogenicity of industrial yeasts against Candida albicans in mice. Only Candida tropicalis showed progressive infection, indicating its potential as a human pathogen.

    Background:

    • Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen causing significant human infections.
    • Evaluating the pathogenic potential of industrially relevant yeasts is crucial for public health and safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess and compare the pathogenicity of eleven industrially significant yeast species against Candida albicans in a murine model.
    • To identify yeasts with pathogenic potential similar to C. albicans.

    Main Methods:

    • Eleven yeast species of industrial interest were inoculated into untreated and cortisone-treated mice.
    • Mice were monitored for infection development, and yeast recovery was performed 6 days post-inoculation.

    Main Results:

    • Only Candida tropicalis demonstrated progressive pathogenicity comparable to Candida albicans.
    • Candida lipolytica, Torulopsis spp., and Hansenula polymorpha were not recovered, suggesting low or no infectivity.
    • Kluyveromyces fragilis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. utilis, C. guilliermondii, and C. maltosa were recovered but did not cause evident infection.

    Conclusions:

    • Candida tropicalis exhibits significant pathogenic potential in mice, similar to Candida albicans.
    • Most other industrially relevant yeasts tested do not appear to be pathogenic in this model system.
    • Further research is needed to fully understand the clinical relevance of these findings.
