    Background:

    • Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a peptide hormone with known metabolic functions.
    • Understanding VIP's role in energy balance is crucial for metabolic research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the changes in plasma VIP concentrations during different exercise intensities and durations.
    • To examine the relationship between VIP levels, exercise, fasting, and glucose metabolism.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected venous blood samples from 6 young men across 4 experimental conditions.
    • Measured plasma VIP and glucose concentrations.
    • Compared VIP levels during prolonged mild exercise, rest, short-term submaximal, and maximal exercise, as well as during prolonged fasting.

    Conclusions:

    • Prolonged mild exercise and fasting, states of negative energy balance, markedly elevate plasma VIP.
    • These findings support the role of VIP as a "polypeptide of substrate need", involved in metabolic regulation during energy deficit.
