    Hepatitis B virus has two main antigens: hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg). Research shows these antigens are distinct components of the infectious Dane particle.

    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is associated with two primary viral antigens: hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg).
    • HBsAg is found in serum, while HBcAg is located within the liver during infection.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To differentiate the antigenic and structural properties of HBsAg and HBcAg.
    • To elucidate the composition of the infectious form of Hepatitis B virus, the Dane particle.

    Main Methods:

    • Serological testing using antisera raised against purified HBsAg and HBcAg.
    • Immune electron microscopy to visualize viral components and their interactions.

    • Antisera against HBsAg reacted with the Dane particle's surface and associated 20-nm particles, but not the core or HBcAg.
