    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Colorectal Surgery

    Background:

    • Giant sigmoid diverticula are a rare complication of diverticulosis.
    • Existing literature includes 13 reported cases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review the clinical features of giant sigmoid diverticula.
    • To add two new cases to the existing literature.

    Main Methods:

    • Literature review of previously reported cases.
    • Clinical review of two new patients with giant sigmoid diverticula.

    Main Results:

    • Two new cases of giant sigmoid diverticula were identified.
    • These lesions likely represent pseudodiverticula of the sigmoid colon.
    • A ball-valve mechanism contributes to progressive inflation by colonic gas.

    Conclusions:

    • Giant sigmoid diverticula are a rare entity.
    • Surgical resection of the diverticulum and involved sigmoid with primary anastomosis is the recommended treatment.
