Consumption coagulopathy associated with arterial aneurysms.

B Satiani, R Savrin, W E Evans

    The Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery
    |May 1, 1979

    Summary

Consumption coagulopathy can arise from arterial aneurysms, though rarely. Prompt blood product management and surgical removal of the aneurysm are key for treating this bleeding disorder.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular Surgery
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Consumption coagulopathy is a rare complication associated with arterial aneurysms.
    • This condition involves the depletion of clotting factors due to aneurysm-related processes.

    Observation:

    • Two cases are presented: one with a femoral artery aneurysm and another with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
    • Both aneurysms contained fresh blood clot and were associated with a coagulopathy.

    Findings:

    • Preoperative control of the bleeding disorder with blood products is recommended.
    • Aneurysmectomy is the definitive treatment.
    • Heparin therapy is generally not required, as coagulopathy often resolves spontaneously after aneurysm treatment.

    Implications:

    • A high index of suspicion for arterial aneurysms is crucial when consumption coagulopathy has no other apparent cause.
    • Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent severe bleeding complications.
