    Summary

    Newer CAB contact lenses significantly reduced corneal swelling in patients experiencing persistent edema compared to traditional PMMA lenses. This suggests CAB lenses may offer a better option for managing corneal swelling.

    Background:

    • Persistent corneal edema is a challenging condition for contact lens wearers.
    • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) contact lenses are sometimes associated with corneal swelling.
    • Alternative lens materials may offer improved corneal health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) contact lenses in reducing corneal edema.
    • To compare the effects of CAB lenses versus PMMA lenses on corneal swelling.

    Main Methods:

    • Nine patients with persistent corneal edema were refitted with CAB contact lenses.
    • Corneal swelling was measured and compared between PMMA and CAB lens wear.

    Main Results:

    • All nine patients exhibited reduced corneal swelling when wearing CAB lenses compared to their previous PMMA lenses.
    • CAB lenses demonstrated a positive impact on reducing edema in this patient group.

    Conclusions:

    • Refitting patients with persistent corneal edema from PMMA to CAB contact lenses can decrease corneal swelling.
