    Summary

This study explored how children perceive facial distortions using a special mirror, finding general differences between boys and girls. Some links between perception, personality, and teacher ratings were observed but were not statistically significant.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Child Development
    • Perception

    Background:

    • Understanding facial perception is crucial in developmental psychology.
    • Assessing the link between visual perception and personality traits in children is an area of interest.
    • Previous research has explored self-concept and sociability in relation to personality measures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the empirical relationship between facial distortion judgments and personality measures in school children.
    • To examine gender differences in the perception of facial distortions.
    • To explore potential correlations between teacher ratings and personality scales.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a motorized facial-distortion mirror to obtain perceptual judgments.
    • Administered personality assessments, including the High School Personality Questionnaire.
    • Collected teacher ratings on hygiene, self-concept, and sociability.

    Main Results:

    • Identified general trend differences between males and females in perceiving facial distortion.
    • Observed a non-statistically significant relationship between teacher ratings (hygiene, self-concept, sociability) and two High School Personality Questionnaire scales.
    • The study involved 88 school children.

    Conclusions:

    • Gender appears to influence how children perceive facial distortions.
    • While trends were noted, statistically significant links between perceptual judgments, personality, and teacher ratings were not established in this cohort.
    • Further research with larger sample sizes may be needed to confirm observed trends.
