    Summary

    Tranexamic acid, an antifibrinolytic, did not reduce corneal thickness in rabbit models. This study found no evidence that tranexamic acid enhances corneal deturgescence, despite its known effects in patients.

    Background:

    • Decreased corneal thickness observed in Fuch's dystrophy and post-cataract surgery patients receiving systemic acid.
    • Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic, but its mechanism for reducing corneal thickness is unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of tranexamic acid on corneal deturgescence in a rabbit model.
    • To determine if tranexamic acid directly influences corneal water content regulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Swollen rabbit corneas were perfused with 1 mM or 10 mM tranexamic acid.
    • Corneas were analyzed using specular microscopy to assess deturgescence rates.
    • Rabbits received pre-treatment with intravenous tranexamic acid before corneal perfusion.

    Main Results:

    • No significant increase in the rate of corneal deturgescence was observed with tranexamic acid perfusion.
    • Pre-treatment with tranexamic acid did not enhance corneal deturgescence compared to controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Tranexamic acid does not appear to promote corneal deturgescence in the tested rabbit model.
    • The mechanism by which tranexamic acid may reduce corneal thickness in clinical settings remains to be elucidated.
