    Summary

    Electron diffraction reveals that hydrated dipalmitoyl lecithin bilayers and monolayers form domains of hexagonally packed lipid chains. These domains, several micrometers in diameter, exhibit structures consistent with hydrocarbon chain electron scattering factors.
